Why use ice and water shield?

In the case of an exposed fastener metal roof, such as Fabral's GrandRib-3, all of those screws are putting a lot of holes in the roofing. in the event of gasket failure (each screw has a neoprene washer as a gasket to seal the hole), ice and water shield (which self sealed around the screw), acts as a backup to keep water from making it any further into your house.

In the case of a shingled roof, ice and water shiled acts as a backup to the shingles to keep any water that is forces under the shingles by ice dams from making it any further into your house.
