A fequently answered question

What is make-up air?

Fires in fireplaces, woodstoves, furnaces, hot water heaters, [gas] wall heaters, [gas] stoves or the like all consume oxygen. The oxygen that they consume comes from the inside of your house. Bath and kitchen exhaust fans push air out of your house. This oxygen in particular and air in general is replaced by air from outside your house. The better job we do of sealing your house (to reduce heat loss), the harder it is for replacement air to get into you house. Many propane burning appliances include make-up air plumbing inside their exhaust systems. Most woodstoves do not have built-in provisions for make-up air. So, in some cases we need to specifically bring in make-up air.
